In an interview with The Blast, Big Boi shared the backstory of the collaboration:
“They called me up and were like, you know, the kings of âSo Fresh, So Cleanâ and the washing machine kings need to get together,” he said with a laugh.
He added,
“We are on theme, we are on code, we got the same mission â to be the cleanest we can be and the freshest we can be. They said, âWe want to put your song on the new Whirlpool washing machine.â I thought it was just a chime, but they have the original track playing at the end of the wash cycle, so I was like, oh man, thatâs dope, I gotta do it.” đ¶đ§ș
Big Boi is so into the project that he even shared a laundry tip for everyone:
“Donât wash white socks with black t-shirts. I just learned this lesson,” he admitted.
He also explained his newfound appreciation for laundry:
“A couple months ago, I started doing laundry, itâs kind of therapeutic. My mom showed me how to put bleach in to get my socks back white. I was always terrified of bleach when I was young because I thought it would ruin clothes.”
A little background for Outkast fans: Big Boi and AndrĂ© 3000 released âSo Fresh, So Cleanâ in 2001. It debuted at No. 71 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2020.
Producer Sleepy Brown revealed that the track was almost exclusively Big Boiâs project because AndrĂ© 3000 initially didnât like the original version.
“It wasnât that he thought it was bad â it just wasnât matching where he was,” Brown told SPIN.
However, once bass player Preston Crump added his part, André got on board:
“When Dre heard that, he got excited and came up with âthe coolest motherfunkers on the planetâ line. Thanks to Preston, thatâs the reason Dre even got on that record.”
From chart-topping hit to laundry day anthem, Big Boiâs collaboration with Whirlpool proves that music â and clean clothes â can go hand in hand. đđ§Œđ”
